v0.1.0 — Notez is live

v0.1.0New featureDenis Povarov

The first public release of Notez. This is everything that made it into v0.1.0 — and, at the end, an honest list of what is not here yet.

Capture

  • CLI — notez "your note" captures text; pass a file path to upload it. Native binaries for macOS (arm64, x64), Linux (arm64, x64), and Windows (x64), installable with curl -fsSL https://notez.dev/install.sh | sh. Self-updates via notez update.

  • MCP server — connect Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, or Windsurf to your workspace. Eight tools for reading and creating notes. Keys are bound to a single workspace and rotatable from Settings → Integrations.

  • Type-anywhere capture — start typing with nothing focused. Letters go to search; ⌘↵ saves the text as a note.

  • Clipboard capture — ⌘V starts a note from text or files on your clipboard.

  • URL capture — paste a bare https:// URL and it is saved as a bookmark note.

  • Source badges — notes that arrived from the CLI, MCP, the API, AI chat, Telegram, a URL capture, or an import are badged accordingly.

Editor

  • TipTap-based rich text: bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, inline code, text color, multicolor highlight, alignment, three heading levels, lists, quotes, and a format painter.

  • Slash commands — press / for 15 blocks including Checklist, Code Block, Table, Image, File, YouTube, and Link to note.

  • Tables with row and column controls.

  • Code blocks with syntax highlighting.

  • File chips — attachments render inline with an icon and size label.

  • Note links and backlinks — type [[ to link a note. The Linked notes panel has list and graph views, with direction shown per link.

  • Version history — 30 days of revisions with preview and restore. A new version is captured at most every 5 minutes.

  • Automatic image compression on upload for common web formats.

Organization

  • Tags with colors, managed from the sidebar.

  • Note nesting — sub-notes to any depth, with breadcrumbs.

  • Boards — kanban view with drag-and-drop, multi-card drag, marquee selection, quick-add cards, and automatic card thumbnails. One board per note by tree position.

  • Custom properties — ten types: text, number, date, checkbox, URL, email, phone, select, multi-select, and relation. Workspace-scoped, with a master-detail configuration dialog.

  • Tags and Board work as built-in properties, so they participate in filtering and sorting.

  • Three views — Table (with a column picker), Grid, and Board.

  • Filtering — up to 10 property filters ANDed together, plus tag filters. Sort by created, updated, title, or a custom property.

  • Pins and a Bin with 30-day retention and cascade delete for sub-notes.

  • Workspaces — separate notes, tags, properties, boards, conversations, and keys.

  • AI chat (⌘J) — fourteen tools over your workspace. Searches by keyword and meaning, walks the note tree, reads tags and properties, and can create notes, set property values, retag notes, and move board cards. It cannot edit note content or delete, move, rename, or pin notes.

  • Hybrid search (⌘K) — keyword matching unioned with semantic vector search.

  • Search omnibox — recent searches, create-note-from-search, and keyboard navigation.

  • Search matches tag names and property values, not just note text.

  • Similar Notes — up to five semantically related notes per note, with similarity scores.

Undo

⌘Z undoes note deletes, board card moves between columns, and custom property changes, up to 20 actions deep. It is suppressed inside text inputs, the editor, and open dialogs so it never fights the editor's own undo. There is no redo; for note content, use Version history.

Import

  • Notion (.zip) and Evernote (.enex).

  • Notion brings page hierarchy and inter-note links; Evernote brings tags and original creation dates. Both bring content and attachments.

  • Runs in the background with live progress, resumes if you close the tab, and keeps a paginated job history with per-note counts.

  • Retry for partial failures and undo, which moves imported notes to the Bin.

  • Storage-limit overruns are rejected up front rather than half-applied.

Sharing

Toggle a note public and get a read-only link at /share/<token>. Turning it off discards the token permanently. Public pages include a report button, and reports notify the note's owner.

Files

S3-backed uploads with paste-to-upload in the editor, a /files page with search, type filters, and sorting, and a link from each file to the note that uses it. Supports documents, images, video, and archives; images preview inline.

Accounts and billing

  • Sign in with email and password, Google, or Apple — or continue as guest and keep everything when you sign up later.

  • Three plans: Free (1 GB storage, 25 MB max file, 1,000 files), Pro (10 GB, 250 MB, 10,000), Ultra (50 GB, 500 MB, 50,000), each with its own monthly AI chat and embedding allowance.

  • Usage meters for storage and AI tokens, with threshold notifications.

  • Session management — see every signed-in device and revoke individually or all at once.

  • API keys with mcp and cli scopes.

Apps

  • Web — the primary surface, installable as a PWA.

  • Desktop — a macOS app (11 Big Sur or later), arm64 and x64, signed and notarized, currently at version 0.1.1.

  • CLI — macOS, Linux, and Windows.

Keyboard shortcuts

⌘E new note · ⌘K search · ⌘J AI chat · ⌘Z undo · / new note dialog · ⌘V paste to capture · ↵ open · P pin · D bin · ⌘↵ save. The full list is in the Shortcuts dialog.

Not in this release

Stated plainly so nobody has to discover it the hard way:

  • No team or shared workspaces, members, roles, or comments — Notez is single-user.

  • No share link expiry, passwords, or permission levels.

  • No folders, no saved views.

  • No offline editing. The web app installs as a PWA but does not cache notes.

  • No desktop auto-update — you get an in-app banner and download manually.

  • No Windows or Linux desktop builds published yet (the CLI ships for both).

  • No mobile app, and no browser push notifications.

  • No two-factor authentication.

  • No bulk export, and no importers beyond Notion and Evernote.

  • No reminders or due dates.

Thanks for trying it this early. The feedback board is the fastest way to influence what comes next.
