Capture, faster: Enter creates, paste saves

Productivity

Most of this release is one key.

Since launch, the search box in Notez has doubled as a capture box: type something, and if it turns out not to exist, ⌘↵ saves it as a note. It worked. It is just not what fingers do in a search field — they press Enter, and Enter did nothing useful.

So now Enter creates.

Enter creates — and says so first

Type anything into the search box and the suggestions show one row highlighted by default: Create note "…". Press ↵ and that is what happens. The search already ran while you were typing — results update live, there was never a "run search" step — so Enter was free to mean the one thing the box could not yet do.

We did not want to hide a surprise behind a familiar key, so the highlight is the contract: Enter does whatever row is highlighted, and the Create row is highlighted unless you arrow down to a recent search. The top line of the suggestions tells you where the search stands — Searching…, then 3 notes found or No notes found — and the page title says the same until you clear the box.

⌘↵ still works everywhere, with or without the suggestions. On the phone the suggestion list shows too, so Enter creates there as well, and the pen button beside the box also saves.

⌘V saves on the spot

Pasting with nothing focused used to open the new-note dialog with your clipboard pre-filled, waiting for you to confirm. That was asking you to confirm a decision you had already made when you copied the thing.

Now ⌘V saves immediately. Text becomes a note; a bare URL becomes a bookmark; a screenshot or a handful of files become a note with the files attached — up to ten per paste, and an image shows right on the card. ⌘⇧4, ⌘V, done.

It works on every page of the app except a note's own page, including the Bin, where the toast tells you the note went to All notes.

Nothing happens silently

Both changes would be reckless without the other half: every capture — Enter, ⌘↵, ⌘V, the pen button — shows a toast with Undo and Open. Undo moves the note to the Bin, where it stays recoverable for 30 days. ⌘Z covers captures too now, alongside deletes, card moves, and property changes.

The two rules we held to, in order:

  1. Typed text is never lost.

  2. A note is never created without telling you.

A stray Enter costs one click. Losing a paragraph you pasted costs a lot more. We optimised for the second.

One fix while we were there

Quick capture used to cut text at 10,000 characters without saying so. The limit is now 200,000 — a pasted article fits — and if you somehow exceed it, the new-note dialog opens with the full text instead of trimming it. Nothing is ever cut silently.

What did not change

⌘E and / still open the full new-note dialog for when you want a title, tags, and properties up front. The CLI and MCP are untouched (the CLI simply inherits the higher limit). And the dialog still closes without saving — that one is deliberate: Esc means cancel everywhere else in the app.
