Boards are where screenshots end up anyway: a bug report, a design review, a "does this look right?" The card is what you look at; the screenshot is what explains it. Until today, getting one onto the other took five steps: create the card, open it, paste the image into the note, close it, and find your place on the board again.
Notez v0.12.0 makes it one: paste the screenshot into the column's quick-add box.
What it looks like
Hover a column and click +, or use the add control at the bottom of the column.
Type a title — "Checkout button overlaps on iPhone SE" — and press
⌘V(Ctrl+Von Windows and Linux) with the screenshot on your clipboard. The image appears above the title straight away, as the card's cover. Press
↵.
The card lands in that column with the screenshot as its cover, and the image sits in the note body where you would expect it.
Paste several files at once and they all come along: the first image is the cover, a small paperclip counts the rest, and everything goes into the note in the order you pasted it. PDFs, logs, and other files become file chips you can click to download.
No title? Leave it empty. An image-only card is a perfectly good card — a mood board, a design review column, a wall of receipts.
Why the card waits for Enter
The first version we sketched saved the card the moment you pasted, the way ⌘V with nothing focused already saves a note on the spot. It was simpler, and it was wrong for a board. You paste the screenshot, then you want to type what is wrong with it. A card that saves on paste forces you to type the title first or rename the card afterwards.
So the quick-add box now behaves like the new note dialog: nothing is created until you press ↵. What happens on paste is the upload. By the time you have typed a title, the image is usually already in storage, so ↵ feels instant. If it has not finished, the card waits for it and then saves — never half-uploaded.
Press Esc and the whole draft, text and files, is discarded. Files that were uploaded but never used are cleaned up automatically after three days, so an abandoned paste costs you nothing.
The preview is local; the cover is real
The cover you see in the box is drawn from the file on your own machine, not from the server. That is why it appears the instant you paste, even on a slow connection — and why it is dimmed until the upload finishes.
Once the card exists, its thumbnail comes from the uploaded copy: the first image in the note, exactly as for every other card. Add or reorder images in the note later and the cover follows, unless you have picked one under Cover image in the card's menu.
The bug we found next door
Building "wait for the upload before saving" made us look at the one other place in Notez that saves a new note with pasted files in it: the new note dialog. It did not wait.
The dialog's editor only inserts an image into the note once its upload finishes; until then you see a spinner. Press Save in that window and the note was created without the image. Worse, if the image was the only thing you had pasted, the note looked empty to the dialog, so Save stayed disabled and you sat there without knowing why.
Now the dialog knows an upload is running. The button reads Uploading files..., and if you press it — or ⌘↵ — the note is saved the moment the last upload lands, image included. Close the dialog instead and nothing is saved.
Try it
Open any list of notes and switch to Board view. Every note with sub-notes has a board of its own.
Copy a screenshot to the clipboard —

⌘V, type a title, and press↵.

FAQ
How do I add a cover image to a kanban card in Notez?
Paste an image into the column's quick-add box when you create the card, or add an image to the note itself. A card's cover is the first image in its note, unless you pick another one under Cover image in the card's menu.
Can I paste a screenshot directly onto a kanban board?
Yes. Click + on a column, press ⌘V with the screenshot on your clipboard, and press ↵. The card is created in that column with the screenshot as its cover.
What happens if I press Enter before the image has uploaded?
The card waits for the upload to finish and is then created with the image. It is never saved half-uploaded.
Can I paste PDFs and other files into a card?
Yes — any format the editor accepts. Files that are not images are attached to the note as file chips; only images can be the cover.
Can I choose which image is the cover?
Yes. Choose Cover image in the card's or the note's menu, then pick any image in the note, or No cover.
Does pasting count against my storage?
Yes, like any upload, with the same per-file limits as the editor. JPG, PNG, GIF, SVG, and WEBP images are compressed in your browser before they upload, and files you paste and then discard with Esc are removed automatically after three days.
